Chief of Spices (NaPoWriMo Day 15)

Precious saffron,
“chief of spices”

stained your
hands ’til they looked
like the sunrise

and the scent lingered
on your skin, synonymous
with the warmth of your
kitchen –

rice tossed in diced ham
and pigeon peas

chicken sauteed to
golden brown and oven baked

garlic bread toasted
to perfection; crunchy
bites that melt in
your mouth

A mother offering
her children

the world

permeated by the
spice of life
